Flight turbulence forecast methodology and accuracy
A transparent explanation of the official signals we check, what forecast confidence means, and why a passenger outlook can differ from the actual ride.

CheckFlightComfort.com is an independent passenger information service. It is not an airline, dispatch service, air traffic control facility, or substitute for professional flight planning. The goal is to translate available official aviation weather into a clearer comfort outlook without presenting an estimate as certainty.
The four questions behind every report
- What route and timing are being estimated?
- Which official weather signals answered?
- Do those signals lean calmer, indicate possible bumps, or conflict?
- How should a passenger interpret the result without treating it as a safety rating?
Current source matrix
Lists real scheduled nonstop flights for the selected airport pair and day when the provider is connected.
If the provider or account key is unavailable, the site clearly says that live schedules are unavailable.
Current observed airport wind, visibility, cloud, and flight category.
Describes an airport observation, not the entire route.
Expected airport conditions near departure or arrival time.
Airport forecasts can change and do not predict cruise turbulence.
Highlights significant turbulence, convection, and other aviation hazards.
An advisory covers an area; it does not guarantee the aircraft will cross it.
Shows what a crew recently encountered near a location and altitude.
It is one observation. Another aircraft may use a different path or altitude.
Provides a passenger-level line for checking nearby signals.
It is not the filed flight plan and can differ from the operational route.
Comfort score versus forecast confidence
The comfort score summarizes how the available route, airport, advisory, and pilot-report signals may translate into passenger comfort. Forecast confidence is separate. It describes whether the main signal groups answered, how fresh they are, and how much route uncertainty remains.
How smooth or bumpy the available signals suggest the trip may feel.
How complete and current the available evidence is for this estimated route.
How usefulness changes before departure
Useful for broad planning. Exact bump locations and storm timing remain uncertain.
Updated airport forecasts and aviation advisories provide a more relevant picture.
Recent observations, active advisories, and pilot reports are most relevant, while the route can still change.
What is not currently claimed
- The displayed line is not claimed to be the filed or final flight path.
- The comfort score is not a safety score.
- An absence of positive pilot reports is not proof of perfectly smooth air.
- A nearby advisory is not proof that the aircraft will enter that area.
- Numerical accuracy statistics will not be published until enough saved forecasts can be compared using a documented method.
Corrections and continuous improvement
Forecast snapshots are now saved without passenger identity so the service can build a future verification dataset. The public forecast verification page reports collection progress and will clearly document inclusion rules before any accuracy result is released.
